A gradient background is a visual effect that changes the PowerPoint slide backgrounds to make it more colorful and attractive.

In addition to a shaded background, you can also have a background with a texture, a pattern, or a picture. PowerPoint 2007 has several different textures, patterns, and pictures that you can apply to a presentation.

This tutorial will shows you how to use the picture or texture background style as well as using your own background picture in your presentation slides.

To create a picture or texture background style

• From the View tab, in the Presentation Views group, click the Slide Master icon to change the background of the selected slide master or slide layout.
• From the Slide Master tab, click the Background Styles button and click on Format Background… link.
• From the Format Background dialog box displayed, in the preselected Fill option, click the Picture or texture fill option to display the available fill effects.

• Click the Texture button, and select a texture, or click File, Clipboard, or Clip Art, and select a picture from your computer hard drive.
• To tile the background, select the Tile picture as texture check box, and then specify the offset x and y, scale x and y, alignment, and mirror type you want. If you clear the check box, specify the stretch background options you want.
• Drag the Transparency slider to specify a percentage.
• Click Apply to All to apply the fill effect to all slides, or click Close to apply only to the selected slide or slide master.

To add custom PowerPoint slide backgrounds

• From the View tab, in the Presentation Views group, click the Slide Master icon to change the background of the selected slide master or slide layout.
• From the Slide Master tab, click the Background Styles button and click on Format Background… link.

• From the Format Background dialog box displayed, in the preselected Fill option, select the Picture or texture fill.
• Click the File button under the Insert from: section to display the Insert Picture dialog box. From the dialog box, browse to the location where to insert the picture and click the Open button.
