According to Microsoft, Microsoft Security Essentials is free real-time protection of virus, spyware and malware protection software. It is simple to install, and easy to use.

Overall, the program does provide basic protection, but not the full featured security program. It will monitor the system for viruses and malware, but it does not do any proactive monitoring.

So to check it out for yourself, it is available for free download here.
